Argentina's banking sector in the nineties: from financial deepening to systemic crisis

Article Abstract:

The liberalisation process in the early nineties has resulted to valuable restructuring in the banking system and financial markets in Argentina. The most significant developments include a vital growth in monetization and financial intermediation, the reversal in capital flight and the elimination of the foreign credit rationing encountered by Argentina in the 1980s. However, other advancements that were not that promising include the deepening of dollarisation and its consequences, the banking system's operational inefficiencies, and the small-and-medium-sized companies without access to international credit markets.

The role of banking system in the international transmission of shocks

Article Abstract:

Three main channels of international transmission of financial shocks through the banking system, are discussed. The first channel is connected with the value of collateral and capital adequacy requirements, the second with the function of maturity transformation, and the third with the presence of implicit and explicit insurance schemes. Preliminary studies agree that the probability of a currency crisis increases significantly in the presence of a common lender.
