Research in economic education: five new initiatives

Article Abstract:

The American Economic Association's Committee on Economic Education developed 5 topics for discussion at a conference. The 5 topics addressed improvement of college level teaching, an evaluation of current economics Ph.D. programs, better use of educational technology, designing better ways to evaluate students, and the long-term effects of an economics education.

Assessing the economic understanding of U.S. high school students

Article Abstract:

High school students were given the Test of Economic Literacy to evaluate the knowledge they learned in high school economics classes. The test showed that students who have studied economics have a good understanding of basic concepts but do poorly on abstract and international economics. All students would benefit from learning economics.

Teacher training programs in economics: past, present, and future

Article Abstract:

The workshops offered by the American Economic Association and the National Council on Economic Education's Teacher Training Program from 1992 to 1994 provided techniques and newer methods of teaching economics subjects to college professors. Workshop participants responded positively to the seminars and have endorsed the seminars to their fellow instructors. Future improvements should focus on development of active-learning strategies.
