Building a new retention strategy

Article Abstract:

The Right Place Program was created in Grand Rapids, MI, in the mid-1980s to attract new business and retain existing business in the area. Its activities were initially focused on traditional economic development services, such as offering tax and training incentives. However, it is now pursuing a new, long-term retention strategy for responding to the real-world requirements of the manufacturing community. This strategy to 'work smarter' is supported by such initiatives as 'World Class Employees,' 'The Performance Place' and 'Tech Prep.'

An Atlantic Canada Trade Development strategy for Latin America

Article Abstract:

The four provinces of the Atlantic portion of Canada have traditionally been economically neglected and thus, would benefit from the establishment of a cooperative agreement that would pool both financial and logistical resources. The trade agreement would enhance trade with Latin America and compensate for the lack of internal trade within Canada because of the existence of constraints and the bias of the country's government towards centralist needs.

Building a community and sustainability together

Article Abstract:

An economic developer can become an effective bridge between a rural community and technological facilities which are regarded with suspicion because of the adverse environmental effects of their operation. This situation is depicted through four case studies involving chemical plants. It was the effectiveness of the dialogue and information process that paved the way for joint and mutually beneficial interaction.
