Building customers one at a time

Article Abstract:

One-to-one marketing, treating clients on a personal level, can be a very challenging activity. However, the strategy can also provide direct marketing firms with the opportunity to interact more closely with their target market. Defining a concrete set of objectives, such as increasing market share, determining leads for future sales and gauging the capabilities of a company's sales force, is the crucial initial step for such an undertaking.

Farmbid.com: creating a one-stop shop

Article Abstract:

Farmbid.com allows agricultural buyers and sellers to conduct business on the Internet. Founded by CEO Ted Farnsworth in Jan 1999, the site auctions off anything from tractors and tools to livestock and crops. The site also features a Community section offering chatrooms and discussion groups, as well as a Wanted section where producers can post listing of items they are looking for. The site so far has registered more than 90,000 farmers.

Farms.com, which started as Cattle Offerings Worldwide in 1995, has emerged as the only Internet-based firm that has successfullly developed a market for such diverse products as agrichemicals, feed, livestock, grain and crop inputs. The Chapel Hill, NC-based company has links to over 60 commodity suppliers, 300 crop input suppliers, 60 growers of alfalfa, 15 stockyards and thousand of farmers that makes up the company's market.
