Petty crime and cruel punishment: lessons from the Mexican debacle

Article Abstract:

The negative reaction of the world currency market to Mexico's devaluation policies led to the peso's collapse in Dec. 1994. This reaction illustrate the modern capital market's attitude to fixed exchange rate systems. The peso's weakness can be attributed to the herding tendency of speculators and the imbalance between gross reserves, public debt and currency balances. Therefore, governments must first study financial indicators before implementing devaluation measures.
