Catching up with the economy

Article Abstract:

Economics as a profession must keep abreast with changes in technology and cultural development and should not confine itself to analytical techniques and concepts developed in the early part of the 20th century for economists to measure economic growth more accurately. Economists should take into account the accelerated rate of technological change and its impact on human affairs and the economy. In addition, economic analysis should focus more on historical data such as life-cycle and inter-generational sets to prevent analytical mistakes.

Cracks in the glass ceiling: gender and promotion in the economics profession

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze differences across gender in promotion probabilities. Panel data for American Economic Assn members was utilized to carry out the analysis. Gender differences in promotion were evaluated using a random-effects probit framework of promotion. Results indicated that the promotion prospects for women are inferior to those of their male counterparts. Findings also showed that promotion opportunities for women economists have improved over time.
