Police on the Picket Line

Article Abstract:

The struggle between the British National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the National Coal Board over mine closures is described. Although Arthur Scargill, president of the NUM, has not called a national strike vote, some mines have closed. Several groups of miners, however, have voted to keep their mines open. Police are on alert if violence erupts.

The Cracks in the Coalface Look Bad for Scargill

Article Abstract:

Although four fifths of British mines have been closed by the miner's strike, there is growing evidence of dissension among union membership. Union leaders are skeptical of winning fifty-five percent of the vote needed to call a national strike. A coal strike will not cause nationwide disruptions.
