Comment on B.A. Weisbrod, "Productivity and Incentives in the Medical Care Sector." (response to articel by Burton A. Weisbrod in this issue, p.S131)

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine issues related to output and productivity in the medical care sector. The study focuses on input and output heterogeneity problem and its impact on on health care productivity measurement and contract design, the dual problem of price index determination and the problem of technology assessment and incentives required to maximize medical care resources in generating incentives. Results show that a distinction must be made between the impact of technological innovations and cost reduction on improving health care productivity.

Output and productivity in banking

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine output and productivity in banking. National accounts, production and intermediation approaches are discussed to evaluate banking output while partial and total factor productivity measures and related data envelopment analysis and other parametric approaches are covered for banking productivity. Results show that technical inefficiency exists dominates the banking industry.

Productivity and incentives in the medical care sector

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine productivity and incentives in the medical care profession. The study analyzes traditional measures of output while focusing on the quality adjusted life year and patient satisfaction level, two dominant measures in the industry. Results show that such measures exhibit effects on resource allocation incentives.
