Conflicts and choices in biodiversity preservation

Article Abstract:

The economics of biodiversity preservation has certain limitations due to the lack of a clear objective. The objective function must be defined in specific terms to properly use scientific data or formulate rational policies for the protection of endangered species. Thus, a workable cost-effectiveness framework must be developed to reasonably guide the economics of biodiversity preservation. The framework must address the utility of a species as well as its distinctiveness from other species, increased probability of survival and the cost of increasing survivability.

Meddling through: regulating local telephone competition in the United States

Article Abstract:

The US Telecommunications Act of 1996 aimed at the enhancement of competition among telecommunications providers and its associated benefits such as new services, quality improvements and price reductions. Contrary to expectations, it only served to reinforce old or create new problems. Competition does not necessarily result in price reduction but pushes prices toward cost. The US could learn from the example set by Canada which has reduced its regulation while, at the same time, promoting competition in its local telephone companies.
