Consumer Sovereignty

Article Abstract:

Electronic banking facilitates market segmentation. An example pattern is given. The impact of electronic banking on operating costs is discussed. Examples of equipment and software franchising are cited. Retail networks, including automatic teller machines, may be rented, rather than owned, increasingly in the future. The cost savings of a system in which high-added-value services are concentrated in 'hub' branches which serve several satellite offices or 'spokes' are explored. Examples of this system being used in the United States and Great Britain are given. Impediments to its use in Germany are cited. Use of electronic banking as a marketing channel is discussed. Telephone and mail marketing channels are also being utilized.
