December 1997

Article Abstract:

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) records still signify a continuing growth in employment, no inflation, and the difficult position of the national economy's labor market. No change in hiring plan level can be observed while 20% of all firms are targeting expansion in employment. The past three months have also witnessed salary increase from 30% of the firms, short by two points for the December 1997 expectation. Seventeen percent of firms considers qualified labor very rare and 28% reported at least one job vacancy that is not easy to fill.

Quarterly report - November 1998

Article Abstract:

The Index of Small Business Optimism increased slightly in Oct 1998. Four of the 10 components of the index rose, five declined and one was unchanged. All of the index's spending components, namely, hiring plans, capital spending plans and inventory investment also posted strong improvements. However, small business confidence in the outlook for future economic growth continues to decline. There are more small business owners who expect a weaker economy in the next six months than those who expect an improvement.

Quarterly report - August 1999

Article Abstract:

A survey of 7,200 small business owners conducted in Jul 1999 reveals that the economy remains unsettled in the short-term. The major issue confronting small business owners is the quality of labor which is followed by taxes, regulation and red tape, competition from larger firms, poor sales, labor costs and inflation. Although the economy remains strong, growth has slowed from 1998 levels. It is predicted that the economy would continue its slow growth in the second half of 1999.
