Draft federal copyright law

Article Abstract:

The United Arab Emirates has approved a draft law on copyrights on June 1, 1992, following draft bills on trademark and patent protection. The draft law is intended to offer protection to a wide variety of works not limited to books, software, video and cinematic works. The draft defines authorship, ownership, fair use and requirement for transfer of copyright. It also sets the duration of protection at 25 years past the author's death. A potential area of abuse lies in a section permitting unauthorized translation of a work if no authorized version appears within three years of initial publication.
