Environmental protection: U.A.E. prepares draft law, joins treaty on climate change

Article Abstract:

The United Arab Emirates has taken two actions which show how important the country considers environmental protection to be. It has drafted an environmental protection law and acceded to the United Nations' Convention on Climate Change. The draft law requires compensation to both monetary and physical victims of injuries to the environment. Parties to the convention must make national records of greenhouse gas emissions and make climate change a factor in economic and environmental planning.

U.A.E. draft environmental law appears to be nearing enactment

Article Abstract:

The possible enactment of a draft environmental law in UAE, called the Law on the Protection and Development of the Environment, is expected in the first quarter of 1999. Among the draft law's important provisions are the empowerment of the Federal Environmental Authority to establish environmental standards and the protection of the marine environment. The draft law also provides provision regarding the protection of drinking water and groundwater.

New Central Bank regulations on representative offices and finance companies

Article Abstract:

The Central Bank of the UAE has issued new regulations for bank and financial institution representative offices and finance companies. The regulations were promulgated under the statutory authority of the Central Bank as granted by the Central Bank Law and were effective Apr. 14, 1996. The resolutions require all representative offices and finance companies to be licensed by the Central Bank.
