Equilibrium and optimal size of a research joint venture in an oligopoly with spillovers

Article Abstract:

A model of an oligopolistic firm is analyzed in relation to its spending behavior for research and development activities as well as its behavior towards cooperative research activity with other firms within the industry. It is suggested that market incentives may be insufficient to induce such cooperation which usually come in the form of joint research ventures. Policy research in this area should therefore be geared towards providing the necessary incentives for cooperative ventures.

A dynamic theory of conjectural variations

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine the relationship between dynamic oligopolistic competition and static conjectural variations equilibria. A model describing continuous horizon adjustment cost is developed for the study. Results show that the equilibriums of steady state closed-loop and conjectural variations conditions match. Linear demand and quadratic cost assumptions generate negative, constant and symmetric variations.

Government-assisted oligopoly coordination? A concrete case

Article Abstract:

The effects of the Danish antitrust authority's decision to publish the transaction prices of two grades of ready-mix concrete in 1993 are studied. It is shown that the publication increased average prices by 15% to 20% in less than one year. It is argued that the increase occurred because the publication of prices changed the information structure which enabled firms to reduce oligopoly competition and raise prices.
