Evidence on discrimination in employment: codes of color, codes of gender

Article Abstract:

There is sufficient evidence on racial and gender discrimination in the labor market. While the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 substantially reduced employment discrimination against women and minorities, competitive market forces did not totally eliminate such practices until the 1960s. Help-wanted advertisements in newspapers explicitly illustrate the blatant gender-typing and racial exclusion in employment. These advertisements show the employers' preferences for job applicants of a particular race or gender.

The impact of immigrants on host country wages, employment and growth

Article Abstract:

Immigration is considered a contentious issue for industrialized nations of the world. This holds not only for traditional receiving countries such as the US, Australia and Canada, but also for certain European nations. Until recently, detailed empirical work done on the impact of immigrants on the receiving economy has been minimal. Recent theoretical and empirical research on the impact of immigration on the wage growth and employment outcomes of natives are thus discussed.
