Evolution of Hong Kong's electronics industry under a passive industrial policy

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong's electronics industry has posted rapid growth despite the lack of support from a positive industrial policy. Such an achievement is unusual in newly-industrialized countries. A passive industrial policy enabled the industry to hasten product development, acquire highly-skilled and hard-working engineers, lower engineering cost compared to the US and the UK and easily source needed electronics component. However, the passive industrial policy resulted in a lack of government backing for high-technology research, manufacturers' reluctance to invest in product design and a shortage of experienced engineers.

Japanese equity market response to U.S. administered protection decisions

Article Abstract:

Antidumping measures have been provided by the Department of Commerce (DoC) and the International Trade Administration (ITC) against the activities of foreign firms that may adversely affect US industry by selling at less than fair value. These measures act as a strategic corporate weapon for US firms by increasing foreign imports costs. Information pertinent to firm valuation is perceived differently by Japanese firms with regards to the final stages and petition filing dates of both the ITC and the DoC.

Does it matter that the prosecutor is also the judge? The administrative complaint process at the Federal Trade Commission

Article Abstract:

Formal decisions being handed down by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) are affected not only by the merits of cases, but also by several institutional factors. The fate of companies under scrutiny by the FTC is affected by the number of commissioners acting both as prosecutors and as judges. The political connections of the commissioners also affect the litigation of companies.
