Evolutionary stability and social norms

Article Abstract:

Self-interested behavior does not necessarily earn higher material payoffs than norm-guided behavior in strategic environments where conformity to social norms can aid in solving the commitment problem. This observation may serve as the basis for an evolutionary theory of social norms. A variety of behavioral norms in a simple environment can be evolutionary stable. Incidents such as migration, conquest, colonialism and integration can significantly change the norms in a given society without assurance that a transition will occur from less efficient to more efficient norms.

Endogenous growth cycles in an open economy with fixed exchange rates

Article Abstract:

A non-linear model of a business cycle with a strong accelerator is developed to examine an open capitalist economy with fixed exchange rates. Domestic capital expenditures, wages and exports are assumed to be the only source of demand for output. The money supply has an endogenous component which changes with the trade balance through fluctuations in the stock of international reserves. The liquidity effects of foreign trade imbalance produce a limit cycle trajectory in cases when strong accelerator effects make the steady state growth path unstable.
