Executive briefing

Article Abstract:

Tensions between executive and legislative groups in Kuwait have continued even after the national elections of Jul 3, 1999. Most regional press reports described the election as an overwhelming defeat for the ruling Kuwaiti government because opposition members ended up controling more 2/3 of the National Assembly seats. The issue of the legality of 60 decrees issued by the Kuwaiti cabinet after the previous Assembly was dissolved on May 4, 1999, has been the dominant factor that is fueling the combativeness between the government and the National Assembly.

Executive briefing

Article Abstract:

Among the judgments made by the UAE Federal Supreme Court are amendments to the Federal Commercial Companies Law, enforcement of a foreign judgment and interpretation of an insurance policy on air cargo. Two new paragraphs were added to Article 2 of the Commercial Companies Law that will allow the incorporation of true multiparty firms in the free zones with the absence of UAE national participation. The Supreme Court also ordered the enforcement of a judgment made by the Shari'a Court of First Instance, which was initially denied by the Court of Appeal.

Jordan: patent protection for pharmaceuticals

Article Abstract:

A number of pharmaceutical firms are urging US trade officials to implement strict patent laws for the Jordan pharmaceutical industry. Jordanian drug firms sell more than 50 unauthorized US drugs within the country. Jordan also exports about $35 mil of these products to other countries. The drug piracy costs the US pharmaceutical industry about $25 million in losses yearly. US drug firms also want the Jordanian government to impose patent protection for finished drugs in the country.
