Exporters, jobs, and wages in U.S. manufacturing: 1976-1987

Article Abstract:

The debate on trade policy direction has become controversial and has elicited greater public attention. Free trade advocates believe lower trade barriers will reduce the costs of commodities and will provide additional markets for exporters. Opponents, however, insist that the consequence of trade openness is a lower standard of living and fewer jobs for Americans. It was concluded that exporters have an important role to play in an economy and that manufacturing facilities should be capable of both domestic and foreign sales. A comment on and general discussion of the article are also included.

Transaction costs, regulation, and subcontracting at nuclear power plants

Article Abstract:

The imposition of federal restrictions regarding the degree of radioactive exposure among workers has created substantial changes in the firm-specific assets and contracting procedures of electric utilities. During the 1978-1986 period, nuclear power plants witnessed a significant increase in the use of contractors. The period mentioned was further characterized by an increased hiring rate for contract employees, particularly for jobs requiring high radioactive exposure and firm-specific assets are vital.
