Exporting and restructuring in privatised firms from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus

Article Abstract:

A study of the exporting activities of privatized firms in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine revealed that mere ownership change, from previous state-ownership to privately-held companies, does not guarantee that the firms will be able to cope with the necessary internal changes. Although it may be argued that the basis for western-style corporate governance has been built, the performance of the three former Soviet republics continues to be in the transition stages.

Primary exports and economic growth in developing countries

Article Abstract:

Primary exports increase less developed countries' (LDC) nonexport growth and GDP as a whole. The positive effect of export on GDP growth has been earlier determined although the impact is substantially reduced in nonexport GDP. However, the growth of primary exports has an insignificant effect on the nonexport sector which constitutes the major portion of the economy in most LDCs. This finding runs counter to primary export expansion policies.

Economic growth, foreign trade, and trade policy in Japan

Article Abstract:

Japan's chronic current account surplus has been viewed as the product of the country's macroeconomic cycle and indicates savings surplus. However, more persistent arguments consider the surplus as a problem that can be solved by import market expansion. Although government contends that the market is open, resistance by local producers to import expansion has been noted in the 1987 Maekawa Commission Report.
