Factor decomposition of Chinese rural income inequality: new methodology, empirical findings, and policy implications

Article Abstract:

Income from the agricultural sector have significant effects on the overall inequality of Chinese rural income, the rising influence of non-agricultural ventures notwithstanding. Policies centered on agriculture, including region-based redistributive measures, can therefore be utilized to pursue efforts directed at lessening the disparity of rural income. Contrary to popular opinion, labor mobility would not lead to reduced income inequality because remittances as substitute for migration would instead bring about an increase in rural inequality.

Partial rationing and Chinese urban household food demand analysis

Article Abstract:

Consumer behavior in a mixed-demand economy, where they can buy necessities from a government subsidized distribution system and additional products from the private market, is affected by income fluctuations. Chinese urban household expenditure data indicate that higher income results in higher demand for higher priced products available in private markets. It is suggested that a rationing system for lower income households should be implemented instead of removing the existing income-sensitive rationing system.
