Fear of flying? Economic analyses of airline safety

Article Abstract:

Airline safety attracts considerable attention in the wake of the deregulation of the airline industry. Some observers maintain that the Civil Aeronautics Board's regulation of the industry is the reason behind the superior safety records of domestic airlines. Statistics show, however, that the long-term trend toward increased airline safety has continued since the deregulation of the industry. Additionally, the chance that a passenger will become a fatality in an airline accident has decreased.

The economic benefits from immigration

Article Abstract:

Certain factors have served to rekindle the debate over immigration policy. Among these concerns are the rapid increase in immigrant flow to the US, major changes in the national origin composition of the immigrant populace and the skills decline of immigrants relative to native worker skills. A survey related to these issues is presented, along with empirical evidence indicating an economically unfavorable picture for more recent immigrant waves.
