From crisis to cataclysm? The mismanagement of Indonesia's economic ailments

Article Abstract:

Indonesia's economic crisis is not yet over as evidenced by IMF's refusal to release the second tranche of its financial assistance to the country because of Indonesia's failure to comply with certain conditions. There are also speculations that Indonesia would resort to economic isolationism with significant barriers to to foreign trade and investment. The economically-important ethnic Chinese community would remain as vulnerable as ever. What started out as an economic problem has degenerated into a political crisis due to a series of policy misjudgments.

Wage inequality in the United Kingdom: trade and/or technology?

Article Abstract:

The growth of wage inequality between skilled and unskilled workers in the United Kingdom is examined within the framework of two models, which analyze the interrelationship between trade, domestic, production, information technology development, foreign investment expansion, and technical change factors. The main causes of the increasing skill premium are considered to be the skill biased technical change induced by policy change and sector biased technical change induced by trade.

The linkages between the timber trade and tropical deforestation - Indonesia

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the relationship between tropical deforestation and commerce in timber in Indonesia belies the common notion that the former is affected by the latter, at least in this particular case. Deforestation was seen to have been more significantly caused by poor forestry management and lack of appropriate regulation on the timber stand stage. Thus, as far as Indonesia is concerned, trade intervention proves to be an unwise policy.
