Global financial instability: framework, events, issues

Article Abstract:

Economic policymakers face significant challenges as they consider possible ways of reducing the danger of global financial instability and how to deal with financial instability when it arises. This happens when shocks to the financial system come into conflict with information flows, making the financial system unable to perform its role of channelling funds to people with productive investment opportunities. Encouraging safety and soundness of the financial system is vital to preventing financial instability in the future.

An evaluation of the Treasury plan for banking reform

Article Abstract:

The US Treasury banking reform plan, Modernizing the Financial System: Recommendations for Safer More Competitive Banks, is evaluated. The plan, penned in response to the crisis in the banking industry in the 1980s, aims to reform the federal deposit insurance and regulatory system. As evaluated, the Treasury Plan generally succeeds in the areas of banking industry regulation and expansion. However, its limitations on deposit insurance and reluctance to use market-value accounting are criticized.
