How BLS measures price change in the Consumer Price Index for lodging while out of town

Article Abstract:

The Consumer Price Index for shelter includes lodging while out of town as part of the other renters' costs index with a weight of about 89% of other renters' costs. The rental value of owned vacation homes is included with short-term rentals available to the general public. Estimated price changes are subject to seasonal pricing patterns resulting in significant variations due to seasonal attractions, such as skiing. Characteristics included in the price determination are occupancy, meals, television and meals, among others. Quality changes are only included if quantifiable and not significant.

How BLS measures price change in the Consumer Price Index for airline fares

Article Abstract:

Airline fare price changes are monitored monthly in the Consumer Price Index public transportation section, with a weight of .997. The index is based on about 850 fares for trips beginning in 85 cities, with 91% of the data from discount services, 7% from full coach and 2% from first class. All flights are regularly scheduled commercial trips. Changes in discount rates are excluded if the value of the change is significant.

How BLS measures price change in the Consumer Price Index for cable television

Article Abstract:

The Consumer Price Index for cable television is part of the fuel and other utilities index with a relative importance of .551%. The data is from 85 sampling areas and includes the periodic charges or the minimum periodic charges plus the installation charges with about 500 quotes. Changes in quality that result in price changes are excluded from the index.
