Hungary and the IMF: the experience of a cordial discord

Article Abstract:

The relationship between Hungary and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) between 1954-1994 was analyzed. The study delved into the reasons behind the funding agency's failure to secure 'greater market reforms' in the country despite the government's amenability to IMF policies. The results attribute the failure to Hungary's propensity to delay obtaining advice, its non-compliance during periods of growth and the presence of institutional filters.

The evolution of complexity in primitive exchange: empirical tests

Article Abstract:

A new hypothesis concerning complexity-driven costs of transactions in primitive markets is tested. The theory advances the idea of kinship structures for repayment of long-term debt in fixed-price systems of exchange. The results, which were culled from chi-square tests, show a weakly exogenous relationship between the 'endogenous right-hand-side variables of population and division of labor.'
