Implications of the labor market for graduate education in economics

Article Abstract:

There has been an increase in new economics Ph.D.s, and they have very low unemployment rates, while their average starting pay has risen. Along with engineering, economics attracts large proportions of foreign students, and this helps departments to maintain standards and enrolments. Demand for economists from government and business is increasing as demand for research economists in academic institutions falls. Some public policy and business schools are starting to train Ph.D.s themselves. Product differentiation has tended to take place outsode economics departments, in disciplies such as environmental studies.

Are preferential trading arrangements trade-liberalizing or protectionist?

Article Abstract:

Economists continue to express mixed views about preferential trading agreements (PTAs). Some believe that PTAs represent a danger to the open multilateral system, while others believe that PTAs represent progress towards multilateral liberalization and serve to strengthen the World Trade Organization and the international trading system. It is clear that PTAs will not ever disappear. It is therefore advisable to focus on finding ways of making them more compatible with further multilateral liberalization.
