Income elasticities of household demand in rural China: estimates from cross-sectional survey data

Article Abstract:

Income elasticities of household demand among rural regions in China count staple food, clothing and fuel as basic needs, while housing, service, eating-out, entertainment and culture, and non-staple food are deemed luxuries. Income elasticity for a commodity refers to the ratio of the commodity's marginal share to its budget share. Regional differences in the elasticities need to be seriously considered in policymaking.
