International banking activity in Greece: the recent experience

Article Abstract:

The growth of international banking activities in Greece was examined by developing two empirical models. The models are on the foreign banks' asset growth and the number of their branches in Greece. The factors considered in each model were trade, country risk, bank market size and distance and the data analyzed were from 1981 to 1992. The influx of foreign banks into Greece was spurred when Greece became a full member of the European Union. It was concluded that the growth of international banking presence in Greece was due to increase in foreign trade, the country's creditworthiness and the distance of the banks from their home-countries.

Money, Trust, and Central Banking

Article Abstract:

Scholars portray a central bank either as a political imposition upon a financial system or as the natural institutional response to the inherent instability of banking. This paper portrays present-day central banks as an institutional adaptation for reducing confidence costs associated with the use or abuse of fiat money.
