International perspectives in undergraduate education

Article Abstract:

Some progress is evident in increasing the international perspectives of undergraduate economics education, but even more is needed. Many basic economic principles need a global framework to be understood, and a global setting provides significant examples of these principles. Such important issues as global warming must have international solutions. Students need an international viewpoint to put statistics in perspective and to understand that other countries have different but effective ways of solving economic problems.

What do undergraduates need to know about trade?

Article Abstract:

Undergraduate students taking an introductory course in economics should be taught the reasons that that pop internationalism is nonsense. International trade is subject to basic economic principles and is based on mutual beneficial exchange, not competition. Misconceptions about productivity, high-value sectors, the influence of trade on employment and the relationship between government and industry must also be explored to provide a basic understanding of international economic issues.

The search for relevance in economics

Article Abstract:

Economics has practitioners in the field who attempt to apply its theories to the economic problems of countries and regions. Teachers of economics must train these practitioners to respond quickly to problems, to communicate with nonprofessionals and to deal with politics. Training should focus on results rather than theory and should emphasize the role of observation and perception in the areas of applied welfare economics, economic projections and diagnostics.
