Effects of the government shutdown on January CPI data

Article Abstract:

The federal government shutdown delayed the collection of consumer price data until Jan 8, 1996. The Washington, DC blizzard also delayed matters as the Bureau of Labor Statistics and many retail outlets were closed due to weather conditions in the week of Jan 8, 1996. These two factors reduced by about one-third the amount of time between the Dec and Jan pricing periods.

The Consumer Price Index - why the published averaged don't always match an individual's inflation experience

Article Abstract:

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) represents an average of the change in prices urban consumers pay for a fixed amount of goods and services, so it may not reflect the experience of one person, especially if that person's spending patterns differ from the average. The CPI sample is designed to represent many different households, not a particular one.
