Investment in education in East Asia

Article Abstract:

Recent data from different sources were used to construct an educational profile of ASEAN member countries and other developing and developed countries in East Asia. Focus is given to the financial aspect of education with analyses made regarding investment in education, prioritization of education in the national economic policy, intra-sectoral priorities, unit costs and funding methods for education. The study reveals that East Asian countries have better educational standards compared to the rest of Asia, Africa and parts of Latin America.

A neoclassical analysis of the ASEAN and East Asian growth experience

Article Abstract:

The growth experience of economies in East Asia is examined using a neoclasical perspective to assess whether poorer countries are growing at a rate where they will catch up the richer countries in East Asia. The data used for the study is from the period 1960 to 1994, and countries surveyed include Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Malaysia and Indonesia. Convergence speed for these economies has been estimated at an annual level of 4.8%. This rate has implications for both richer and poorer countries, where technology will become more important.

Education and economic development in Southeast Asia: Myths and realities

Article Abstract:

Literature on the remarkable growth record of certain economies of southeast Asia has offered several explanations, but the importance of education has been stressed. However such literature over-generalizes, and as such, policies for Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia are reviewed. It is argued that such economies have all followed different education policies.
