The regionalism debate: an overview

Article Abstract:

Supporters of the establishment of preferential trade areas (PTAs) argue that these regional groupings are paving the way towards freer trade. Those who support multilateral trade are of the opinion that PTAs and other regional groupings such as Customs Unions and Free Trade Areas basically detract the member countries from pursuing true trade liberalisation and further fragment the world's trading system. It is argued that a real open trading system should never be discriminatory.

Regional trade agreements: their role and the economic impact on trade flows

Article Abstract:

The consequences of regional trading agreements, notably the North American Free Trade Agreement and the European Union, on the world's multilateral trading system, called the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade was researched. The study revealed the presence of a prevalent disagreement on the effect of regional trade agreements on the multilateral trading system and that part of this disagreement comes from different roles of regional trade agreements.
