Labor and economic reform

Article Abstract:

Egypt is trying to create jobs and reform the economy primarily through privatizing government-owned businesses but is facing resistance from public sector employees who fear for their jobs. Twenty-seven state-owned companies have been earmarked for privatization, and labor laws are being modernized to permit collective bargaining, strikes and reform of social security. The Egyptian Trade Union Federation is the primary advocate of labor and disputes the government's plans to eliminate tenure and commodity subsidies.

Water privatization: the dangers and the benefits

Article Abstract:

An assessment of the British water industry since its privatization in 1989 is presented. The rationale for the transformation of the country's 10 water authorities into independent firms is analyzed. For these privatized firms, meeting environmental responsibilities should be an integral part of corporate strategy as well as profit maximization. The industry's prospects are also outlined.
