Labor market reform and the changing structure of wage determination in China's state sector during the 1980s

Article Abstract:

The introduction of labor market reforms in China brought about moderate improvements in the country's rate of return to skills. During the first phase of the reform's implementation, slight changes in China's wage determination scheme took place, while earnings profile remained stable. It was also found that wage differentials account for a major part in the country's wage structure. Results further suggest that since the introduction of market-oriented reforms, the country experienced changing industry effects.

Wage determination and occupational attainment in the rural industrial sector of China

Article Abstract:

The remarkable economic growth achieved by the township and village enterprises in China could be attributed to the deregulation of the market in the 1980s and the labor market practice of having individual firms decide on wage structure. This situation was attained despite the relative immobility of labor and the strict control of capital allocation. The wage determination process was not linked to educational attainment although the latter increased occupational prestige.
