Article Abstract:

Currency forecasters insist the dollar will fall from its unnaturally high position in 1984. High United States costs and a growing trade deficit indicate the dollar is too high. Rising interest rates have held it up. Graphs compare the dollar to other currencies.

The dollar is recovering in fall 1983. Most critics feel the dollar is overvalued. Theories concerning capital flow developed by John Williamson are reviewed. A chart shows the dollar's actual exchange rate against other currencies.

No Panic

Article Abstract:

Sterling has fallen against the dollar. The government is not worried about its economic policy because the effective exchange rate is stable. This means that Britain's competitiveness with its trading partners is the same.
