Measuring Poverty: An Introduction

Article Abstract:

Poverty measurements basically involve judgements about distribution of income but there is no one ideal method. Concern for poverty takes in giving special attention to the lower income distribution segment of a population. Some may think that concern over poverty is just a special kind of concern for inequality and that poverty measures have no unique role. However, people are usually concerned about poverty because they think there is some threshold for income below which deprivation and suffering exists.

Measuring poverty: an introduction

Article Abstract:

Several methods can be used to measure poverty in formulating economic policy. One is the headcount method, which indicates incidence. Another is hypothetical populations, which indicate variations. A TIP curve displays incidence, inequality and intensity, allowing for comparisons. Other methods include relative and absolute poverty lines. The accuracy of all methods can be improved by using time periods for data gathering.
