Methodology: alchemy or science?

Article Abstract:

David Hendry gathered 19 of his best papers in the book 'Econometrics: Alchemy or Science?' According to the writer, the collection traces his most notable essays on econometric methodology between 1974 and 1985 during which the technique blossomed into its current form. Students of econometric methodology will appreciate the volume as a history of his personal methodology while students of time series econometrics will value the volume as a collection of high-quality research papers.

Why does methodology matter for economics?

Article Abstract:

There is a need to come up with a methodology for economics that would reach the standards set in other disciplines to enable critics to more objectively review economic literature. The parochial view that every discipline has its own internal standards is no longer viable. Four books that recognize the need to define a philosophy for economics are evaluated. The books are written by Mark Blaug, Daniel Hausman, Alexander Rosenberg and Lawrence Boland.

On the convergence and divergence of growth rates

Article Abstract:

A review of important new theoretical literature on economic growth is presented. The writings of Barro (1991) and Mankiw et al (1992) suggest that countries with low initial incomes grow faster than countries with high initial incomes. Durlauf and Johnson (1995) and Quah (1996) have argued that cross-country growth is incongruous with convergence and has more in common with endogenous growth mechanisms.
