Broadcasting for the agricultural community requires a mix of credibility and knowledge from the broadcast personalities involved. The capability to build a relationship with their audiences and, consequently, to sell advertising space in their TV and radio programs, is what sets them apart. These few individuals include Tribune Entertainment Co's Max Armstrong and Orion Samuelson, Ken Root of AgriTalk and AgDay Television's Al Pell.

Farmers harness the power of e-commerce

Article Abstract:

Net Horsepower Inc of Tipton, CA, was established by farmers Ralph and Diane Friend on Feb 8, 2000, after realizing that farmers had very little control over the marketing of their products. The company operates Horsepower.com, a Web site that permits farmers and other agricultural product manufacturers to sell their wares online. The Horsepower site also allows farmers to request bids on over 500 types of farm inputs as well as arrange for its transportation.

Milking byproducts for all they're worth

Article Abstract:

Hilmar Cheese Co is capitalizing on the rising trend in protein supplement usage to look for new ways of profiting from milk byproducts. The cheesemaker, through strategic partner Proliant, is now looking at further applications for whey. Whey is a milk byproduct that is retained after cheese production. Hilmar, which used to sell whey as a food source for cows, has expanded its market to include babies, health-conscious people and even bodybuilders.
