On productivity and plant ownership change: new evidence from the Longitudinal Research Database

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the effect of plant acquisitions on productivity. Data from an unbalanced panel of 28,407 plants of the food manufacturing industry provided by the US Bureau of Census Longitudinal Research Database for the period 1977-1987 were analyzed. Results showed that highly productive plants were more likely to change ownership. Plant productivity growth was found to be positively related to change of ownership. The results indicate that the managerial-discipline theory is not effective in explaining most ownership changes.

Productivity measurement in common property resource industries: an application to the Pacific coast trawl fishery

Article Abstract:

Industries with common resources, such as the open-access Pacific coast trawl fishing industry is studied. The results of the empirical analysis exemplify the need for adjusting capacity utilization, resource abundance and catchability coefficient for technology specification and relevant regulatory policies. The exploitation of these resources without concern for regulation will limit productivity and hamper efficiency.

Scale, scope and spillovers: the determinants of research productivity in drug discovery

Article Abstract:

A model of industrial research productivity in the drug industry is constructed to determine the factors that affect industrial productivity. The knowledge production function developed by Griliches was adopted. Results reveal that research efforts made on a large scale are more productive due to economies of scale. Moreover, spillovers of knowledge gained from research have been found to exist in the drug industry.
