Instant intimacy: when the silence in a subway car is broken, you may suddenly find yourself with a needy friend

Article Abstract:

A man's sudden plunge off a NYC subway platform and his equally sudden rescue before he could be injured led to the author's encounter with his lingering fear and his effort to engage her in a conversation of reassurance. Such encounters do not occur on subways because silence is the environment in which commuters share a space that moves them from one location to another. That silence is uniquely broken for the good of all when crisis brings strangers together.

Retrospective tax legislation draws fire

Article Abstract:

The Canadian Bar Assn's Joint Committee on Taxation and the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants have submitted objections and alternate proposals on income tax reform to Canadian Finance Minister Donald Mazankowski.
