PORTUGAL: WINES BREAK INTO FOREIGN MARKETS
Article Abstract:
In Portugal, 1999's wine campaign totalled nearly 7.23mn hectolitres produced. In 1999, wine producer Sogrape, which markets brands 'Mateu Rose', 'Offley' and 'Ferreira', increased sales by 20%, totalling Pta 20,000mn. Nearly 70% of Sogrape's production is destined to foreign markets. From 2000 to 2002, Portuguese wine producer Caves Allianca intends to allocate Pta 2,000mn in order to improve production, refurbish installations and acquire new vineyards. This group, which produces sparkling, white and red wine, exports 50% of its production, particularly to Brazil and Europe. Wine producer Jose Maria da Fonseca destines a main part of its red wine production under brand 'Periquia' to Sweden, where in 1999 it sold 300,000 wine box-bottles.
