Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom market for pet care services and products is expected to grow 14% in 1996 from 1991 following 12% growth by value to 640 million pounds sterling in 1995 from 1991. Expenditure on veterinary treatment is expected to grow 13% during 1991-1996, while sales of OTC healthcare products are expected to grow by around 108% in value during 1991-1996 in real terms. Own label pet food products have not made a great impact on the market, with grocers generally preferring to stock brand products. The pet insurance sector grew over 20% during 1993-1995.

Cat and small animal food

Article Abstract:

Cat ownership has increased from 23.7% in 1991 to 25.1% in 1996. Sales of cat food account for 99% of product sales in the market for cat and other small domestic animal food. Most of this is canned food which, in 1995, had 92% of product sales. Spillers is the market leader, and Friskies UK leads the dry food market. Armitage Pet Products is significant in the cat treats and fish food markets. The total spent on pet products and care in 1995 was 2.8 billion pounds sterling.
