Pitfalls to avoid when measuring institutions: is doing business damaging business?

Article Abstract:

Governments and international aid organizations usually allocate huge amount of resources in simplifying the processes involved in setting up and formalizing firms. Most of these organizations focus on the reduction of initial costs of setting up the firm and disregard the role of business registers. It is believed that the priorities of reform policies must be thoroughly reviewed.

Culture rules: the foundations of the rule of law and other norms of governance

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to present evidence regarding the relationship between national culture and social institutions. A testable hypothesis about the rule of law, corruption, and democratic accountability is generated. The study found out that relative stability of cultural orientations is indicated by the use of cultural profiles of a previous generation as an instrument.
