Policy forum: health care reform

Article Abstract:

Health care spending in all OECD economies has steadily increased over the years. This has made health care provision a central issue in public policy agendas. In the UK, public provision is the main source of health care services and the system is exposed to structural reforms. In comparison, the US provides health care through the private sector and reform is more evolutionary. The Economic Journal devotes a Policy Forum to health care reforms in these two countries.

Trading preferentially: theory and policy

Article Abstract:

The most excellent type of economic theory of international trade has almost always reflected policy concerns, while informing policy in turn. The policy debate on preferential trade agreements makes economists arrayed on varied sides. The US intention to turn APEC into an FTA has been opposed so far by its Asian members who have embraced instead the belief that any trade liberalization under APEC supports should be on an MFN basis.

Policy forum: taxation, in-work benefits and the labour market

Article Abstract:

In-work benefits has been a debatable issue due to their effect on hours worked and labor market participation. They are one of the many governmental instruments which can affect incomes. The criteria used in selecting in-work benefits is examined. Two regimes operating in the UK and the US using these criteria are also examined. Pointers for future reform are identified from the cases presented.
