Policy watch: the introduction of indexed government debt in the United States

Article Abstract:

The US Treasury Department's issuance of indexed debt gives individual investors an inflation-proof channel for long-term savings. Indexed debt relies on the Consumer Price Index as a basis for its valuation. As such, it is not affected by fluctuations in the value of the currency. Aside from benefiting the investors, it also positively affects the public in general as it encourages the government to eschew inflationary effects in its formulation of monetary policies.

What central bankers could learn from academics - and vice versa

Article Abstract:

The viability of academic training in real-life situations was tested by analyzing the economics of the central banks, particularly, the Federal Reserve. Using a Tinbergen-Theil framework, assumptions such as controls for certain instruments being maintained by the central banks and the current expected discounted value from inflation and unemployment were made. From these, the need for more conceptual but less situational monetary policymaking was derived.
