Polish bank consolidation and foreign competition: creating a market-oriented banking sector

Article Abstract:

The consolidation of state-owned commercial banks in Poland is studied by analyzing the characteristics of the country's 19 largest banks and comparing the current structure of Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic's banking sectors. An analysis of the Polish government's consolidation proposal shows that the proposal is insufficient in meeting economic and political objectives. A market-oriented banking sector may be created by combining consolidation with foreign competition.
