Roth IRAs or deductible IRAs: the contribution and conversion decision

Article Abstract:

Conversion from a deductible IRA to a Roth IRA is preferable if the full account balance is rolled over, and the tax is paid from other sources. No advantage is gained by using the deductible IRA to pay the tax and converting the remainder to the Roth IRA. The Roth IRA is superior to the deductible IRA if the annual maximum of $2000 is contributed to either type of account and the tax savings from the deductible IRA are invested, under constant tax and return rates. The two IRAs are equivalent if the tax is paid out of the $2000 contribution.

Polyglot
