Price movements February 1996

Article Abstract:

Both consumer price indexes (CPIs) rose 0.3% in February 1996. The CPI for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose to 154.9 without seasonal adjustment, a rise of 2.7% for the last 12 months. The CPI for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) rose to 152.2 without seasonal adjustment, a rise of 2.6% for the last 12 months. Smallest 12 month gains were in energy, 1.2% for the CPI-U and 1.1% for the CPI-W. Largest 12 month gains were for the CPI-U medical care and entertainment, both 3.8% and for the CPI-W medical care at 3.8%.

Article Abstract:

The Consumer Price Index (CPI-U) for All Urban Consumers went up 0.6% in Jan 1996, while the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) went up 0.5%. The CPI-U rose to 154.4 without seasonal adjustment, a rise of 2.7% for the past 12 months. The CPI-W rose to 151.7 without seasonal adjustment, a rise of 2.6% for the past 12 months. Both CPIs had their smallest 12 month gains in apparel and upkeep. The largest 12-month gains were in medical costs in both CPIs.
