Report of the Committee on the Status of Minority Groups in the Economics Profession

Article Abstract:

The American Economics Assn's Committee on the Status of Minority Groups in the Economics Profession reports about their 1996 activities and the representation of minorities in economics. The number of Hispanics, Native Americans and blacks in the economics profession is still small. Similarly, only a limited number of minority students are conferred economic doctorates. The committee, meanwhile, has gathered information about their past Summer Program participants. The data will be used in appraising and enhancing the Summer Program.

Economic integration: conflict versus cohesion

Article Abstract:

Cohesion is reflected in the concern of citizens over national economic well-being over that of their own localities. This cohesion has been raised to a higher level as the global market continued to expand and integrate. However, it has also raised conflict over the ideally projected balance between national economic development and international concerns. This conflict has been shown in the case of EC members.

Economic integration and the location of firms

Article Abstract:

European industries are less geographically concentrated compared to US businesses as individual countries in the region have established their presence across an extensive range of operations. Thus, economic integration and the location of firms will affect aggregate activity and economic geography. Agglomeration occurs when industrial concentration increases profitability for other firms.
